Keanu Reeves at the Street Kings premiere

Keanu Reeves last night snuck in for a visit to the preview of Street Kings.

But it’s clear to me that two years in Australia for the Matrix trilogy didn’t have much of an impact on him.

The boffin from MTV gave him a book featuring an Aussie “d***head” (the guy who got into trouble and picked up a few contracts for his unauthorised Facebook party in Melbourne).

Keanu’s response: “That’s a bit of an old joke, isn’t it?” Yes Keanu, it is, but roll with it mate or you’re at risk of being labelled the d***head.

Keanu reckons he’s not ready for a move to Australia just yet. He says he didn’t have much time for a beer. And seemed to have picked up “bevvy” as his favoured slang. Surely mate you could have come up with better than that?

He seemed a little frustrated by the publicity jaunt. And his short speech before the movie included a comment about how nice the screen was for such an “intense” movie.

He then thanked everybody for coming out on the night. I’m not sure everybody was “coming out” but there quite clearly were a few who already had.

Regardless, credit where it’s due. Keanu was polite. He was responsive to fans in a nonchalant sort of way. And he did the 360-degree pivot for those with cameras.

Speaking of cameras, rest assured it can be rather daunting walking up red carpet with a thousand people banging on barracades beside you, three television cameras metres from your face, and papparazzi in waiting at the end of the carpet.

The parties I can handle. But they can keep the fame!

As for the movie, there’s plenty of blood and guts in a shoot-em-up, much in the ilk of Kill Bill and the new genre of film sparked by Full Metal Jacket way back when.

The plot has all the depth of a weekly CSI episode, which incidentally will appeal to many people. And the high-end cast will see it rate highly at the box office.

It’s worth a look, but keep the kids at home. Don’t go if you’re offended by blood, bullets or bad manners.

Holty’s blog

Simon Holt is not from Sydney. But he badly wants to be able to call the Harbour City home. He’s the new kid on the block and wants to find out what all the big-city fuss is about. Either click on pages listed on the right or for a bit of spice in life, check out Holty’s restaurant reviews, found on the link at the left.
