I spent a lazy Sunday floating around Sydney Harbour with some friends. I was doing the tourist thing, and loving every minute of it.
I grew up seeing the postcard picture of the harbour, the bridge, the opera house and Sydney tower in little more than, well, a postcard. So the real thing still excites me, even after 12 months of living in Sydney.
As I looked at the iconic backdrop, bouncing cliches from one side of my brain to the other, I thought of the tired phrase: “Some people just don’t know what they’re missing out on.”
Then the Captain Cook Cruises commentary kicks in. There’s Frank Lowy’s house. Russell Crowe lives in that one. This one over here is worth $55 million – the glass alone worth a cool million bananas. It apparently belongs to Aussie John … yes mate, we’ll save ya!
Lachlan Murdoch sold his for about $13 million. And staff had the presence of mind to call a mobile number hanging from the side of a three-bedroom unit to find it was letting for $3000 a week. I’m not sure about you, but I’d need a fair few flat mates to conjure up that sort of money.
But Nicole Kidman – albeit temporarily – would be living just up the road. Surely that alone is worth the price.
It then occurred to me: Until Sunday, I didn’t really know what I was missing out on. I guess we all know there’s another half living a higher life than us. We watch from a distance, instead enjoying and appreciating the lot we’ve been dealt.
I didn’t feel bad. Those people work hard for their riches. But I did wonder when I might be receiving an invitation to one of their backyard barbecues?
Yes, aside from that shameless suggestion, there’s really no point to this latest post.
They must have some great parties (not the sort you find on Facebook, I imagine). Rest assured, rich and famous people, I will behave. I promise not to spill drinks on the cashmere. And the antique vases are safe with me.
Honestly, I’m pretty easy to please. A snag and a stubby keeps me more than happy.
Oh, and if the governor’s reading, it’s Winter so I won’t be needing to swim in your pool.
